Ceramics

Detail [»]

After the Thirty Years War, the Chodsko region became a pottery-making region, mainly in Domažlice, Hostouň and Koloveč. Local products became popular, and ceramics from here decorate many Czech homes and those of our neighbors, considered traditional by now. This is especially true in the case of Koloveč ceramics. One family has been manufacturing ceramics since the 18th century.  Patterns created back then - white lines on a raddish-brown base - are still applied, though now a modern version of the decor is also produced. Klenčí ceramics differ, what we consider today to be its original look are actually relatively new motifs, custom made to order. When in 1920, the "collective for Chodsko individuality and folk culture" Chodovia was formed, local potters joined. Shortly thereafter, ceramist František Míča moved here from Kunštát. He tried to come up with a pattern truly capturing the local identity. By combining motifs from the Chodsko folk costumes and popular ceramic decor from various areas, he created red poppies, golden cobs and blue forget-me-nots on jugs and mugs in the 1930s. The idea quickly spread. It was later given a black base, and remains very popular today. Ceramics produced today include flower embellishment on a white or black base, blue and white pottery, and recently brown and white decoration as well.
