Important communities

The eleven historic and privileged Chodsko area villages are Draženov, Chodov, Klenčí pod Čerchovem, Klíčov, Chodská Lhota, Mrákov, Pocinovice, Postřekov, Stráž, Tlumačov and Újezd. Domažlice is not among them, but has always been the area´s natural center. A fortified city by the 1260s, it also had a castle and Augustinian monastery. The center of the city has preserved its historical apperance. A symbol of the city and entire region is the leaning church tower, which visitors can climb to enjoy the pretty view. It stands in the center of the square closed off by the monastery and a stone gate on the other side. One of Bohemia´s nnicest squares, it is surrounded by romantic streets with historical houses. A true attraction waits in nearby horšovský Týn: the beautifully restored chateau, once an early-Gothic episcopal castle from the mid-13th century, offers several tour circuits and features a sprawling park with preserve. The historical center also underwent spectacular renovation. The town of Klenčí pod Čerchovem lies on the old trade route to Bohemia, and provides a fine opportunity to get to know the place and its atmosphere. In the Church of St. Martin on the square rests Lammingen, reviled by the Chodsko people. The Jindřich Šimon Baar Museum shares the history of Klenčí and the entire Chodsko area, as well as the life of this famous writer. Behind the village by the road to Chodov lies a pretty, well-maintained cemetery with graves of J.Š.Baar, Jindřich Jindřich and Jan Vrba with preserved tombs and adorned with Chod ceramics. In Újezd, there is a preserved village green with several protected farmsteads. The exhibit at the Kozina estate shows visitors the traditional layout and furnishings of a Chodsko home, and the history of the Chodská rebellion. You can also find original estates in Chodov, Mrákov and Postřkov. Trhanov has an interesting chateau, pretty pond and rare linden tree alley.
